EC-6 and Grades 4-8
Students should decide on the bachelor's degree to pursue and take appropriate courses to meet the requirements as listed in the University catalog. Degree totals will vary according to choices made by the student regarding teaching specializations or teaching fields. Students in EC-6 or grades 4-8 certification will be working toward a bachelor of science degree with a major in interdisciplinary studies. All other students will be working toward a bachelor of arts, a bachelor of science, a bachelor of music or a bachelor of business administration degree with a major in the department. (Note: Students Transferring to WTAMU from a community college may receive credit for either EDUC or TECA courses, but not both).
Secondary/All Level

General Degree Plan for Teacher Certification
Students admitted under this program will select a major in a teaching field and receive a degree in that major. If EC-6 or grades 4-8 certification is chosen, the student will receive a bachelor of science degree with a major in interdisciplinary studies. An official degree plan should be requested in the Office of Teacher Preparation and Advising, located in Old Main, Room 415, after the completion of 54 semester hours.
A suggested plan of study will vary according to teaching areas, summer school attendance, and personal preference. A minimum of 120 semester hours is required, but this total may be increased according to the selection of teaching fields.
NOTE: Rotation of courses may be amended. Students should contact their advisers prior to each semester of enrollment to determine the correct course sequences. Summer-session or intersession courses should be scheduled.
Please notice:
Criminal History Background Information: A criminal background check including fingerprinting will be performed by the Texas Education Agency before a candidate will be allowed to certify or gain employment on a non-teacher certificate. TAC 227.1(b)(1)(2).
- Items on a candidate's criminal history report may render the candidate ineligible for certification.
- Candidates may request a preliminary TEA background check for an evaluation of their criminal history. Please note that applicants may request a preliminary TEA background check for an opinion of charge prior to starting a program: https://tea.texas.gov/texas-educators/investigations/preliminary-criminal-history-evaluation-faqs
- All applicants with any prior or current criminal charges are encouraged to discuss their specific background with the Director of Educator Preparation Programs before enrolling in any academic program that includes a certification route.
English Language Proficiency Requirement: An applicant for certification in Texas must be able to communicate, listen, read, write, and comprehend the English language sufficiently to use it easily and readily in daily communication and teaching. - Completion of a high school diploma, undergraduate, or graduate degree at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States; or
- Verification of minimum scaled scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) of 24 for speaking, 22 for listening, 22 for reading, and 21 for writing; (TOEFL scores must not be older than 2 years from the date of application) or
- A high school diploma, undergraduate, or graduate degree was earned at an institution of higher education in a country outside of the United States listed in TAC 230.11
Admission to and Retention in the Educator Preparation Program (EPP)
For TEA purposes, please sign up and create a TEAL Account . Next,print and sign the completed EPP Online Applicationand email, mail, or deliver the application and required documents to the Office of Teacher Preparation, Advising and PACE, OM415. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
All applicants must submit these items:
- Printed and signed application;
- Two passport photos (do not submit a copy of your passport; submit two current passport photos, which are available for a nominal cost at Walgreen's, Wal-Mart, or the U.S. Post Office)
- Complete applicant interview/screening questions
- Please note that applicants may request a preliminary TEA background check for an opinion of charge prior to starting a program.
Requirements for Enrollment in Student Teaching
- Retention in the Educator Preparation Program.
- Documentation of a minimum of 40 clock hours of field experience.
- A passing score on the TExES PPR certification exam.
- A passing score on the TExES content exam.

- Effective July 30, 2019: Any candidate admitted to WTAMU as a student or any candidate in the Educator Preparation Program who seeks to take a practice TExES certification exam with testing services must attain approval from the Office of Teacher Preparation and Certification and be uploaded into the CRAFT system. For any WTAMU student/EPP candidate who chooses Non-University on the testing form to avoid this process, the score received will be invalidated and not accepted by the Office of Teacher Preparation and Certification. Certification Requirements for Bachelor Degreed or Higher Candidates
An individual with a previously earned bachelor's degree may gain initial certification through one of WT's alternative certification programs. See wtamu.edu/pace for additional information.
